Who Are BTS?

BTS — also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan (방탄소년단), meaning "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" — are a seven-member South Korean boy group formed by Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE) and debuted on June 13, 2013. Over the course of a decade, they evolved from an underdog hip-hop act into one of the best-selling music artists in history, breaking barriers on the global stage in ways no Korean act had done before.

Early Years (2013–2015): The Hip-Hop Roots

BTS debuted with a hip-hop-forward concept, addressing school-age anxieties through their early School Trilogy2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8,2?, and Skool Luv Affair. These releases established a gritty, emotionally raw identity that set them apart from the polished, glossy idol acts dominating the industry at the time.

Breakthrough (2016–2017): Wings and the HYYH Era

The The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (HYYH) series marked a creative turning point, exploring youth, loss, and identity. The WINGS album in 2016 pushed their artistry further, incorporating literary references and solo tracks for each member. BTS began charting internationally and earned their first Billboard entry.

Global Domination (2018–2022)

With Love Yourself: Tear (2018), BTS became the first Korean act to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200. Their Love Yourself series reached billions of streams worldwide. Hits like DNA, Fake Love, Boy With Luv, and later Dynamite (their first all-English single) cemented them as a global mainstream force. They delivered a historic performance at the UN General Assembly and sold out stadiums worldwide.

Military Service & Solo Era (2022–Present)

In 2022, BTS announced a pivot toward individual solo activities, with each member pursuing solo albums and projects while several members fulfilled South Korea's mandatory military service requirement. This chapter has allowed each member to establish distinct solo identities, while fans anticipate a full group reunion.

Fandom: ARMY

BTS's fandom — ARMY (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth) — is one of the most organized and impactful fandoms in music history. ARMY has mobilized for chart campaigns, social causes, and cultural diplomacy, making the BTS–ARMY relationship a defining feature of modern music fandom.

Legacy

BTS redefined what K-Pop could achieve on the world stage, broke the language barrier in mainstream Western music, and proved that authenticity and artistry could coexist with commercial success. Their influence on the global spread of Korean culture is immeasurable.
